I love this class. Loved hearing from Spinning, it just reassured how powerful a culture can be on student learning. I also appreciated the activity of organizing assessment and priority. I am glad others share my value in what matters for student learning. Also, I am excited for success at the core, I am going to use the descriptive writing lesson next week! Can't wait to implement these strategies as a future leader!
I enjoy coming to this class each Thursday as well! Success at the Core is wonderful and very useful. I can't wait to share it with my leadership team and teachers. I think they'll appreciate the easy layout and ready made plans. You are a great leader!
I loved Collette and Traci's presentation, whoop whoop! I felt inspired and enthused by the dedication that they both gave to relationships with the adults and students in their building---and HOW FAR that went in regards to their schools success and student growth! WAY TO GO SPINNING! Love Success at the Core and how it allows us to "Work Smarter NOT Harder". Glenn, thank you for the gift of time you gave us tonight---so appreciated!
I really enjoyed Collette’s and Traci’s leadership perspective. Getting graphed into a “glass house” in the middle of the school year must have been a challenging experience. I am also excited about NOT micro-managing but empowering the staff and validating their work! A few key points: “Always make sure that the people you work with and for feel invested in the process.” “Go to the people in the know!” “School improvement is an ever involving system of change.” When changing the culture of the school starts with the students. Then focus on the feel and look of the environment. If you start with a laser focus on staff, that might be counterproductive and be met with resentment.
It was interesting to hear from Collette and Traci about their journey at Spinning and how they worked with staff and students. I liked hearing from current administration about how they approached the work ahead of them and their attitude towards the situation. My favorite quote from Collette was, “They (staff) were hungry and just didn’t know where to start.” I am also excited about the Success at the Core website and the many resources that it has to offer. I am all about collecting resources instead of recreating if possible. I envision using the website for Professional Development during my internship.
I thought the same thing about my internship -- Success at the Core will make us all look pretty good!!! Maybe Spinning needed new blood or Collette's no-nonsense approach to get things in gear and find a place to start. It worked!
I am loving all the resources we are getting in this class. The "Success at the Core" is truly a valuable and usable tool for us now and for when we are principals. Between that and my awesome, yet rather large, "Data Coach's Guide" book, I will have many tools to hit the ground running with data. Traci and Collette's presentation on indistar was a huge help. I loved what they said about using your school in creating and building the Indistar plan. That way there is accountability, familiarity and the plan will be more likely to continue when you're gone. I'm kind of excited to figure out more about this whole Indistar thing.
Love this class! I appreciate all the resources that are being shared week in and week out. The presentations are always so insightful. The presentation from Collette and Traci was open, honest, and sincere. I couldn't imagine coming into a new school in the middle of December...that would be a very difficult situation. I loved Collette and Traci's attitude toward the challenge. They embraced it and worked hard with the staff to make Spinning a wonderful learning environment. They recognized that teachers needed to be vested in the change; therefore, promoted leadership in the their plan and building. I liked Collette's quote..."I want to recognize all those who helped turn Spinning around. I don't want them in the shadow." Empowering others is definitely a priority at Spinning!
Success at the Core is fabulous! I can't wait to explore and become more familiar with it, as I think it will be a useful resource for my work with teachers.
I was impressed with Collette as she gave "kudos" to all who were involved. The staff at Spinning really worked together, as a team, to make AYP a reality!
I really appreciated how real Collette and Traci were during our class last night. Once again we hear how these assessments and a lot of the data is just one day in a student’s life, and it’s nice to hear this from a couple of great leaders who were literally thrown into the fire to help turn things around. I also loved the fact that Collette mentioned that you can’t coddle everybody, teachers and students included. I thought this was a great attribute that she had as an assistant principal at Emerald Ridge and I can see how it would be an asset to have in a struggling school, especially if the goal is to see student achievement rise sooner rather than later.
Thank you, Collette and Traci. I am inspired to come to your school and see GLAD and AVID in action. Real, down-to-earth, and not micro-managing...unless need be. :)
I was fascinated by the idea of BERC and have spent a long time this morning on their website. I found, "The BERC Group began development of a classroom observation protocol in 2002, after extensive review of research from cognitive science, learning theory, and instructional theory. The resulting protocol (STAR Classroom Observation Protocol) measures a construct called Powerful Teaching and Learning. It is aligned with brain-based science and is built around How People Learn: Brain, Mind, Experience, and School (National Research Council, 1999). " What is interesting to me is that they also have a crosswalk between state criterian, the three instructional models (5D, Danielson and Marzano) and their STAR. They have a white paper on learning walks and the importance of common awareness leads to common understanding leads to common language leads to common practice. My first question when I heard of this outside group was.....who? Are they teachers? I found that "members of The BERC Group are education professionals with K–20, experiences as teachers, counselors, psychologists, building administrators, district administrators, and college professors." I am absolutely fascinated by this. Are they effective?
Wow. what a great night. I am so thankful that we have the opportunity to listen to educators and their vast experience. Traci and Collette shared some fantastic insight on school reform. I loved the way they presented from a "down to earth" perspective. I am fascinated with the indistar process, and wonder why more schools aren't using at least parts of this to make changes in the buildings. I was surprised by the idea of the BERC Group, and like Brittane wondered the same thing- who are they? Are they educators? I think I'll have to spend some time on their website as well! I love the idea of the brain based research they use. I am so curious to learn more.
Okay, major bummer, I typed out my whole comment and it didn't post... Here I go again... I enjoyed Collette and Traci's presentation. I liked the emphasis on recognizing the professionalism in the building, and having teachers be accountable. I am curious how they did that part, besides putting their names in the plan. I liked how she said the change started with the students, helping them to feel more comfortable at school as well as empowered. I like her approach, and having taught in a Title 1 school, and at Chief Leschi, I can relate to her comment about breaking down the barriers to learning, and how important that is! It sounds like the BERC group was helpful to them making plans for improvement. What a job Collette walked into, sounds like she has done a fabulous job!
Success at the Core is great! Thanks for sharing that with us!
I took some time this afternoon to look through all of the valuable resources Glenn has posted on the BLOG. Informative videos, sample work for future assignments and websites to visit… Great information right here in front of us to use! Thank you Glenn. It is nice to have these resources readily available. What a process Spinning Elementary staff has gone through. If things do not change all schools will be in the same situation and need to navigate through the same process. Collette, Traci and Spinning staff will be a valuable resource for those who have questions. I appreciated how candid Traci and Collette were in regard to their entire experience. I am excited to explore the Success at the Core website. It is great to have access to high quality resources for leading Professional Development/staff trainings and classroom lessons.
Thank you all for the great comments! It was a true pleasure to present and share with you the journey Spinning has been on. The information you are learning in this class and your leadership class truly transforms your thinking and frame of mind when working with students and staff. Enjoy your own journey and amazing things will happen!

Yes on NOT micro-managing! Why not use the talents within your staff to help lighten the load for everyone:)
